Misdiagnosis & Survival Rate
She would have had a 98 percent chance of survival had she not been misdiagnosed.
This is the sad truth behind the case of Stephanie Dickson from Edinburgh, who died in 2013 after a tragic misdiagnosis.
For nine months, Stephanie reported symptoms that included severe headaches, sore neck and dizziness. She repeatedly visited doctors, but they continued to prescribe her painkillers for what they deemed stress-related headaches. She eventually went to an emergency room where she was placed on an IV drip, but was discharged the following morning. Within hours of being discharged, she was found dead by her family.
An investigation into her death found that had she been given the correct treatment for what was later found to be a benign brain tumor, she would have had a 98 percent chance of survival. The case becomes even more tragic when considering the fact that Stephanie had briefly mentioned the possibility of a brain tumor to a friend, though this possibility was not explored medically. A professional medical second opinion from a team of specialists at a top-ranked hospital could have easily prevented this tragic occurrence.
