WHEN TO CALL YOUR DOCTOR FOR EYE, CHEMICAL IN

Call Your Doctor Now (night or day) If

  • You think you have a serious injury
  • Acid or alkali was the chemical
  • Cloudy spot or sore on the cornea (clear central part of eye)
  • Blurred vision persists after irrigating the eye
  • Eye pain persists after irrigating the eye
  • Continued tearing or blinking persists after irrigating the eye
  • FIRST AID - Irrigate eye immediately before calling

Call Local Poison Center

  • All chemical exposures  (EXCEPTION: household soap, sunscreen lotion or other obviously harmless substance).
  • National 800 phone number is 1-800-222-1222, or check the front cover of your phone book.

Call Your Doctor Within 24 Hours (between 9am and 4pm) If

  • You think you need to be seen
  • Redness persists for more than 24 hours

Call Your Doctor During Weekday Office Hours If

  • You have other questions or concerns

Self Care at Home If

  • Harmless chemical in the eye with no complications and you don't think you need to be seen
